I work with textiles, defined as textile layers/pieces, where transparency, texture and colour are the key elements. I operate within a non-figurative universe.
Through my work, I challenge the boundaries of conventional perceptions of how, this medium is used. For instance, I often enjoy stiffening individual textile pieces to eliminate the natural draping effect. Some series prioritize the combination of transparency and colour. In others, texture and colour is prioritized.
Transparency adds an ethereal and visual lightness to the artwork. It naturally exists in several qualities such as organza and cheesecloth. I often create transparency by myself by tearing, cutting, burning, fraying, pulling threads etc. Transparency is important to me, because it gives rise to new expressions through the interplay of transparent layers.
Texture for me is linked to a kind of sensory depth. It provides volume and physicality to the artwork. I deconstruct and reconstruct existing materials to create forms, that invites touch.
The use of colour is another essential component in my artistic practice. I believe that colours and combinations of colour can evoke a certain mood. Additionally it is interesting to investigate how colour is absorbed and appears in different textile qualities and weaving types.
I mostly sew and embroider by hand. I prepare each textile and craft textile pieces from various leftover materials. The individual layers are assembled using webbing straps, wooden structures and similar elements into a finished artwork. I work with both wall-hung and spatial pieces.
Site-specific works and installation occupy a significant role in my artistic practice.
